Using a crutch

Hi everyone,
I'm at home today because i have a fractured metartarsel bone in my foot. Actually that's not why i'm home, I'm home because I've been on crutches for five weeks (three left) and the joints and muscles on my wrists and hands is giving up!
I've decided to rest them- with the only exception being this email to you lot. It's been an incredibly long time since I did this. That's because my internal clock has now been set to london time where your too busy to do absolutely anything that anybody ever asks you to do and you still don't have time to get to the things that you'd like to.
It's a lot of fun though- i suppose you just end up getting a bit selfish, head down do the hard work and fiercely defend the evenings because there the only beautifully stress free moments of your day.
Our evenings are particularly special because we have a roof terrace (which we've stuck a couch onto) it's cool to have space to sit out in Lonodn. Before you start dreaming of decking and hammocks it's on the roof of someone elses bedroom, and the couch hurts when you sit on it. And when it rains we cover it with some tarpaulin that was meant for a car. Still - it's home.
Home is in islingotn and I work in Charing Cross Road for Borders, Camilla works near Kings Cross for the Childrens Society. Work is another thing that London ends up being all about, after all that's why most people are here- it's certainly not for health reasons or rent.
I'm absolutely loving work at the moment but it comes and goes- there are moments I despise it, but at least it's aleays evoking a strong emotion. I'm working on the events programme for opening new stores along with a host of other things including Hasselhoff signings and antique valuations. it's varied and pretty unique for someone who likes books and is also out going- it's pretty much perfect!
Pretty much... what would be more perfect would be if i was writing full time and that's something I'm still pushing for. Through work I have started making some useful contacts. Someback doors into the world of publishing- very useful. I have a short magazine article published, my short story of course, but more interestingly Simon and Schuster are looking at a Children's book me and my cousin Sarah have created (mainly Sarah!) and I'm trying to get a good friend from Down UNder published too.
My own writing is a slow process- I keep getting distracted and not having time to do it- which is why having it full time WOULD be berfect. Still it's all moving.
I bought a bike about three hours before putting myself on crutches for two months and I'm really looking forward to using it to get to work. It's the first time I've been even remotely close to getting into shape (although I fear even saying this might be an exaggeration- best to just ignore it!) I still eat too many pringles (those who are interested will know how pleased I was to find Cheese Pringles in my local TEsco! FINALLY! They're back- the campaign paid off). And those adverts they have now with people just drinking vegetable oil to show you what's really in your crisps are basically specifically made for me. (I'm drinking about two a week).
I've been watching LOST, being disapointed by the new DJ Shadow album, and really disapointed by the price of Cinema tickets in London (£9!! each) which I paid to go and see the Black Dahlia- that was really disapointing too!
Tonight I'll be doing a bit of writing, making food with Camilla and possibly watching a movie.
Hope everybody who recieves this is alive and well- I'd love to hear from you, but not from beyond the grave.
I'll try and write more often- or you could all set your clocks to London time and you'll be too busy to notice that's it's been two months....
Alistair
